Tokyo-based fashion label Toga by Yasuko Furuta is characterized by urban, multilayered ensembles. Yasuko Furuta is a self-taught designer who made a name for herself, as a freelance costume designer and a stylist before launching Toga in 1997. Toga originates from a Greek word, meaning draped clothes. Designer Yasuko Furuta was inspired by a British movie from 1948, based on the original Hans Christian Anderson fairytale “Red Shoes”. The season’s theme was built around a hero – Vicky and it was called “Vicky’s Nightmare”. The movie was revived in the original format in full-color negatives under the supervision of Martin Scorsese virtuoso, which deeply impressed Yasuko Furuta. The romantic mood drifted the collection towards pastel colors and softened edges of print, by putting a bead on a combination of two types of flowers. A lame chiffon cardigan, soft pleated tulle skirt, feminine long dress and etc. with drapes, black and color print were used to point out Vicky’s nightmares, by expressing the feeling of insecurity to erode. Vicky’s image was projected throughout the whole collection.
